I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Verizon
Interview
Most jobs are filled by people who the hiring manager already knows. If you should get an interview, be prepared for questions that may have nothing to do with the job. The hiring manager will ask situational questions from a template that could be used for many other positions.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Verizon (Irving, TX) in Dec 2012
Interview
The hiring process was long and tedious. There was a change in the recruiters. It took several months to find out if I received the offer. The Manager was swamped with projects.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Verizon (Basking Ridge, NJ) in Jul 2013
Interview
Although I didn't fit all their job specs perfectly, I did get to have a 15 minute phone interview. I thought I had failed the phone interview but was surprised to get an in-person interview with initially with both my potential supervisor and a co-worker (who didn't ask any questions). The potential co-worker left and then it was just one-on-one. I got the impression that I wouldn't get the job because I was missing some experience. Why an in-person interview?
