I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Wegmans Food Markets (Syracuse, NY) in May 2026
Interview
Incredibly odd interview. I’ve never had a recruiter be so dull and lifeless. She asked a plethora of questions that seemed unrelated to the position. When I told her I was willing to work overnights Friday - Monday she scoffed that I couldn’t work Tuesday - Thursday because of school. What retailer doesn’t want an employee committed to working the hardest shift to fill? She had zero personality and seemed bored. Complete opposite of what I would have expected from Wegmans. It felt cold and scripted. I was just applying for some extra cash. I’ll use my education and experience somewhere else. For a regional grocery store, Wegmans acts like they’re Disney.

Interview
Most bizarre phone screen for a part time position in the produce department. Wanted to know my long term goals, how long I planned on staying with the company. Asked what my preferences were with regards to be client facing vs behind the scenes or working independently vs as a team. When I expressed my indifference to either option and stated I had experience in all those scenarios. The recruiter pressured me to specify a preference then give a reason as to why that was my preference and then still proceeded to ask about the option I didn’t choose and what I liked most or least about that option. Overall just a very strange that I was forced into answering these questions as opposed to actually asking me about my work history, experience, education and how those things could contribute to the company. Know whether I prefer working alone vs in a team or customer facing vs behind the scenes doesn’t really gauge my ability to do the job. For context i have a degree and over 7 years experience in retail and client facing roles. I’m pretty certain I have the skillset to stock produce part time.

It was a screening phone interview. Fairly standard questions. I got a notice to schedule less than 24 hours after submitting an application. You pick a time slot from the options.

A lot of standard questions like: Why do you want to work for Wegmans? What are your short and long term goals? What is your availability? When are you available to start? How would you deal with an upset customer? Why are you interested in stocking at Wegmans? What questions do you have?
