Pros

Pay and benefits were very good compared to some other companies of the same size. For example, before divestiture, all new employees were given extensive training. You were sent to their schools, and taught all the facets of the company, and telecommunications in general. You had frequent reviews to let you know how you were doing. The medical benefits package was excellent, as was the salary schedule. Since there were many different special departments, if you needed to do any research for your job, the information was more than likely available within the compay. Vacations and holidays were more than ample each year.

Cons

After divestiture the mind set of the company changed drastically, and some of the senior managers tended to overreact. It made it difficult to work with your customers and have them understand that thing were not going to be the same as before. Middle level managers were placed in the middle of trying to keep the customers happy and following the new guidelines of the company. There were a lot of customer losses, and since they were long term contracts, it took a while to gain back the lost revenue. Then at the same some time new employees came on board, and since they did not really understand telemommunications, that hurt also.

Pros

AT&T is a leading edge company with a long history, stability and growth potential. Because of the size and scope of the company, there are lots of opportunities for vertical and horizontal movement, and you will find yourself working on projects and learning about things you never dreamed you would be! It's not "the telephone company" anymore!!! There are opportunities in areas as diverse as network engineering and IT, entertainment and content, sales and marketing, legal, finance, HR...you name it. Because of the nature of today's telecom marketplace, I would expect applicants with experience in customer lifecycle management, product lifecycle management, entertainment and content, and IT (particulary IP) would have better than average opportunities.

Cons

I really cannot think of a downside for the non-hourly employee. However, I hear a lot of complaints from friends who work in union-represented positions. Still, positives outweigh the negatives. Complaints are mostly from sales and support (customer care) positions, complaining of long hours, little recognition (though great pay), poor managers, and little opportunity for advancement.

Pros

AT&T has very many talented, driven people. The IT shop has a standard process and toolset so it makes it easier to communcate across organizations and have successful implementations. Pay and benefits are very competitive. Generally, management is good at sharing information, although one can feel inundated weeding through all the communications.

Cons

There is a ton of change and work to do, along with aggressive timelines, due to the competitive telecom environment. Employees are asked to be advocates for the company by promoting products, although they are compensated for referrals. There are still plenty of customers who've had bad service experiences so sometimes this gets uncomfortable when talking to friends and family. Non-union (management) employees who normally have desk jobs must spend many hours training to fill in on phone repair and service rep jobs in case the union strikes. This happens every four years when a new union contract must be negotiated. With regard to work life balance, the company does not promote telecommuting and has few professionals who work part-time, although some is allowed.
