Pros

It is virtually impossible to get fired for cause which is very frustrating to employees who give everything they possess.

Cons

I have seen countless examples from as long ago as 6 years. It does not matter how good you are, if you have never caused an outage, if you have never had anything but a stellar review. They will let you go when you achieve 14 to 16 years as a permanent employee because the cost of your modified pension (not the same as people hired as little as 3 years before me) plus your salary is not worth the trouble. They would rather hire someone new for whatever they can get away with.
