Pros

Amex really backs their employees - no one was laid off in 2020 despite the pandemic, and we were told that early on, which was amazing from a job security perspective. PTO policies are incredibly generous, and WFH flexibility was the norm long before COVID. There are great interest networks you can join to meet people outside your business unit, and on the whole, most people are intelligent, collaborative, and friendly. Steve (CEO) is likeable, honest, and his priorities seem to shift with that of his employee base (e.g. a strong emphasis on D&I in 2020 and beyond).

Cons

Amex pays about 30% below market value against other financial institutions. It is also incredibly challenging to get promoted at Amex, and you often get stuck in a role for much longer than you'd like. Even when you do get promoted, there are VERY stringent guidelines about compensation attached to promotions, so it's hard to secure a significant raise at any given time. The annual review process is also extremely over-complicated.

Pros

-Generous yearly PTO -Good health benefits, -Fun colleague promotional events throughout the year -Flexible work environment, -Great CEO (he is very candid) -Getting further in diversity and inclusion for employee groups/events. Overall, a good place to start your career if you're interested in learning about the company, and enjoy the 9-5 work environment.

Cons

-Bureaucratic ways of management -Undervalues hardworking staff, -Promotes often based on nepotism -Slow to drive agile mindset across the company -Lower wages compared to others in the industry, outdated technology, and not all leaders are promoted due to leadership abilities, more overly promoted for technical abilities or overall tenure. It's assumed, the longer you're here, the more you know- this is not always the case. Buyer beware, if you accept an offer at this company- the furthest you might go comp wise is going to be very dependent on what you enter the company at. In terms of promotions, you must find influential leaders that can help get your name out and support your growth. If they are leaders who might not be as well perceived by their peers, you might not want to be associated with them for too long. Program teams have slow movement and multiple meeting requests- it can feel like you're going in circles to accomplish anything . There are alot of bottlenecks when multiple teams have to work together.
