Pros

HR and Company policies are fair. The employee need not fear filing a complaint or airing a grievance. The annual review process is also fair, employees are given an adequate opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and contribution to the company. Performance feedback is provided on a regular basis. There are also many employee recognition programs and opportunities to move about between departments.

Cons

Compensation - Amex works with what they call "Compensation Bands", meaning there is a salary range for each postion and a salary cap for each position. EX - a compensation band for a a management position could range between 60k - 70k. Management decides where you fall. When positing for a position within the company, it's very difficult to rise above your existing band. You'll probably start on the low end of the compensation band in the next position. Often times, employees leave the company to obtain a better salary elsewhere (higher than their current "band)and then return so they can make the jump into the next compensation bracket. Medical Benefits are sub-standard. There are high deductions from your paycheck and high co-pays and deductibles.

Pros

You get to work with friend friendly, talented people - top achievers and outgoipng, team-oriented MBAs who are the norm. Also, the work/life balance is the best I've seen among the fortune 500s.

Cons

The pay ... it's less than what you would get at banks.

Pros

American Express prides itself on Work/Life Balance. Obviously, there is some variation based on the group, but overall, does a phenomenal job of it. There are many opportunities for development and advancement because Senior Management is goaled and evaluated against whether their direct reports are achieving their development goals. It creates a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.

Cons

As a large company, it is sometimes difficult to move things quickly or without at least 3 other parties wanting to have their say on an issue.
