Pros

The mission: we help save lives. Most of the people I work with are like family-a very disfunctional family, but family.

Cons

ARC is floundering-instead of addressing root cause of our problem, which is poor customer service to our donors and sponsors and no ongoing recruitment of new donors (or appreciation of existing ones), they consolidate call centers (so there is no personal touch), have no field management of Collection staff, so there are a lot who are lazy, inept and uncaring and prefer to do Facebook on their phone than interact with our donors. Drives begin late, supplies aren't taken, there are no programs to entice NEW donors, so we harass our existing ones. The latest bone-headed move is to allow more appointments to be made than we have staff able to process. So potentially (10) donors could all come in when there are only (5) appointment slots at a blood drive. Way to value and thank our donors, Red Cross! We already can't process donors in the time we are supposed to, so let's DOUBLE that amount!! Collections, Donor Recruitment and Hospital Services work HORRENDOUS hours-there IS no balance. People DREAD each day and turnover is ongoing.

Pros

The mission is truly great. You join this place because you want to help make the world a better place and improve the quality of life for people struck by disaster.

Cons

Blood side: The decrease in revenue caused senior management to pressure the employees to the point of verbal abuse. They should look at laying off the management set in their ways rather than professional staff willing to make changes for the better (disclaimer: I was not laid off and lay offs were not in progress when I resigned.) Formal complaints to HR not acknowledged or resolved.

Pros

Company has been through its ups and downs throughout the years. Overall it was good to me and I received great training there when they offered it. Its challenges now are trying to gain market share again and donor retention. The benefits were always excellent and the pay regardless what some employees thought, were competitive. Raises were given when other companies were freezing wages. Even when our raises were on hold, a flat bonus was given in lieu of an increase to recognize worker's accomplishments. I am grateful that I worked there for a cumulative of 22 years before a final layoff. No regrets.

Cons

Financial troubles have hit this organization big time with numerous layoffs over the past 2 years and more to come. The Dedham location is practically nonexistent and the morale is like working at a morgue. Management really needs to think things through before rolling out systems that cause layoffs, only to find out the system is not adequate. Need to pilot programs first before finalizing implementation. Hire people based on their actual experience, talent, personality and intelligence. Stay away from the continued "old boy/old girl" model that plaques that environment with incompetent decision makers. The company is a foundation worth saving and deserves to live on.
