Pros

The cause, saving life's. Overtime rate is good.

Cons

Adulterious behavior amongst all level of staff! That's the only way to get promoted or a decent raise. No care or concern for staff safety, vehicles are not maintained and are filthy. If you do not participate in clique-ish type behaviors, you are punished, talked about and sabotaged. Fear is used as a tactic to motivate. Professional-ism does not exsist here. Depends on what supervisor you work with for the day determines if you get a break.. Was told this was acceptable. Was told would have to work some Saturdays. Found myself working on a regular basis a 6 day work week.

Pros

Dedicated local staff and volunteers trying to make a difference at the local level and serve as a safety net for a population with very little other options.

Cons

Upper management demand accountability with zero knowledge of local relationships. Horrible staff morale and a top down management system that fails on just about every level. Staff turnover is destroying what made the Red Cross so great and management doesn't care. Horrible decisions being made without taking into account the unique relationships on the local level. Upper management are destroying the Red Cross and its only a matter of time before the financials are too obvious to ignore.

Pros

Many positions are set at hourly wages: you are paid for your overtime. You are providing a valuable service to humanity. Co-workers and supervisors are generally amiable and helpful individuals. Employer matches 401K contributions up to 4% with an additional annual contribution.

Cons

The organization has been plagued by years of ongoing layoffs and cost-saving re-engineering programs. The (once generous) benefits are consistently being rolled back and/or discontinued: the pension was discontinued; health insurance costs nearly doubled in the last year and management is clearly attempting to steer employees into high-deductible, high-coinsurance, high out-of pocket plans; through a conveniently labeled "standardization" of national PTO policy, most employees recently lost 3, 6 or more days of PTO per year. It is increasingly difficult to advance in a company that is either laying employees off or discontinuing positions through attrition. Resolving pay-related discrepancies is notoriously difficult due to unresponsive HR, Payroll and ADP (third party contractor) staff.
