Great Mission, low moral

Pros

The Red Cross has a great mission. They help people when they are in need. Those that do work for the organization are passionate and you get to work with the best volunteers in the world. It is wonderful to be able to help someone in their darkest hour and to learn from all the volunteers. As paid staff the benefits are decent.

Cons

There is no stability. In the years I worked there I saw no less than 4 nationwide reorganizations. The last two years moral has been low, as more work is pilled on those still left. Those expectations are added, and the expectation that the staff meet or exceed the goals or work load set before. There is no work/life balance as more expectations are added. Over the last few years moral has been low, as you constantly expected to be the next one let go. It also seems there was little regard as to the qualifications of those picked to stay in management.

Pros

-You're working for an organization that's generally viewed positively. -You will make a difference if you do your job. -Looks great on your resume as a volunteer or paid staff. -Relatively easy to get a job. Especially, if you volunteer first and take on leadership roles. -You can go far as a volunteer. -If you love what you do despite the faults, you will make it through

Cons

-Overworked -No job stability/security -No investment for applicable employee professional development (everything is Red Cross training) -Nowhere to move to (your lucky you kept your job... for now) -People can be moody, whiney, and nitpicky because they're living on the edge -You can't help everyone who shows up -The cons are a NATIONAL problem. Every Red Cross... Everywhere in America! -Work/life balance? Doesn't exist, even on the calmest day
