Pros

The mission and the fact that all the worker bees really care about it.

Cons

Leadership and management are so disingenuous. We are facing huge challenges and they appear to have no idea what they are doing. Morale is awful but mad morale is improved by leadership setting the tone, and not just through words but with actions. You can clearly see that all the responses to the reviews on this site are written like talking points. They are not written like they actually care about what the reviewer said, they are not even directed at the reviewer but at the audience.

Married to the job

Pros

Positive mission and impactful programs that can be leveraged to make all aspects of your job a bit easier. Volunteers become like family.

Cons

You are married to the work. The amount of programs that you are required to implement is incredibly taxing on top of responding to local and large disasters 24/7. The workforce of volunteers are wonderful but they burn out quickly because the work they are asked to do could be considered a full time job. As a staff member you are investing your time in energy into volunteers who will eventually leave and you will have to start over again. Its mentally exhausting. The amount of communication is insane. There are regional, divisional, national programs and voices and campaigns that throw new information and expectations on you daily. It is clear that national headquarters has a lot of paid manpower to create work and huge expectations for the few in the local communities who have to execute. If you do not value your personal time or friendships outside of Red Cross, this might be the job for you.

Pros

The mission of the Red Cross is awesome; there is nothing quite like being able to make a positive impact on the lives of disaster victims and the community. It is also very rewarding to work with a dedicated team of community volunteers and leaders.

Cons

Extremely long work hours (12-14 hours a day is common), without additional compensation. It is also common to work weeks at a time with maybe a day or two off. Senior management is unconcerned with the stress of long hours or the lack of resources on the employees, resulting in very poor morale not just in SC but across the country. National-level leadership continues to increase mission areas without additional resources or consideration for the impact these additions have on day to day operations.
