Pros

Work can be incredibly challenging and rewarding. You can see your work make a difference and you get to work with some amazing human rights defenders in various countries.

Cons

Amnesty has a culture of bullying that is tolerated. Managers are reluctant to take responsibility for the organization's work and endlessly waste money on consultants. Too many layers of approval to get your work through prevents addressing urgent situations.

Pros

Diversity of work, internal mobility, ability to learn and grow in new areas, international travel, flexibility of role. This has been a post I've been given wide responsibility to shape and make my own. The content of the work is diverse and stimulating, if often challenging. It is great to be able to learn from areas different to your own (law & policy, research, campaigns and communications).

Cons

It is a major bureaucracy. It requires patience in order to get things moving. A proportion of almost every role is therefore spent on internal advocacy and coordination. It has been a difficult couple of years with major internal restructuring, which has taken toll on staff morale. Jury is out on the overall leadership of the international secretariat but things seem to be moving in a more positive direction again.
