Amnesty as an employer

Pros

Work can be incredibly challenging and rewarding. You can see your work make a difference and you get to work with some amazing human rights defenders in various countries.

Cons

Amnesty has a culture of bullying that is tolerated. Managers are reluctant to take responsibility for the organization's work and endlessly waste money on consultants. Too many layers of approval to get your work through prevents addressing urgent situations.

What a mess at the USA offices

Pros

Some of the staff were great, incredible people dedicated to promoting human rights and basically making a difference in the world. Strong sense of ethics.

Cons

The executive level managers were god awful. Amnesty USA had been going through excessive turnover at all levels, but especially at the top. Too much cronyism going on, leading to really bad hiring decisions -- ineffectual, indecisive and irresponsible executives just out to squeeze as much money from the organization as they could. They've lost a lot of really good staff that were important in keeping the place running at all, as well as wasting a lot of money.

Pros

Nice holidays. Cosmopolitan staff. Clean working environment and a good annual football trip.

Cons

Ego's of Human Rights Heroes. Abundance of passive aggressive attitudes. No accountability. Hierarchical, outdated and irrelevant. Deeply conservative and twee. Preaches to the converted and strategies consistently fail.
