      Never-ending bad news, layoffs = bad morale

      Pros

      Compared to other investment banks, decent work/life balance.

      Cons

      Since the bank announced last May that the investment bank will be shedding 7000 jobs, the mood has been bad. Morale is poor. Annual rankings force each manager to classify 10-20% of their direct reports as "needs improvement". Anybody that gets this ranking is let go. In other words, every manager has to let go of people every year. The number of scandals and regulatory issues Barclays is currently involves with is embarrassing and depressing. Bonuses were laughable or nonexistent.

      HR Leadership team not really living the values, not collegiate culture, seem to go round in circles doing the same things

      Pros

      Hard to find. But there are very smart people somewhere there. They are constantly trying to hide from HR and senior management.

      Cons

      HR service is really bad. Compensation is lowest in the market. They are firing people at will. Bureaucracy is overwhelming. This is simply the worst place I have ever worked.
