Pros

Big name on the street. Well-promoted and highly regarded. Good resume builder. Smart and eloquent people. Investment ideas well expressed and published. Above average pay and benefits.

Cons

Highly political environment post many acquisitions in a short time. Low retention rate. Nice people resigned for good. Long hours are expected by incapable management. Little guidance and poor infrastructure. Pay more attention to cost cutting than employee job satisfaction.

Pros

- Prestigious - if you're in New York. People outside this office often feel marginalized. - Some very smart people work here. - Compensation & benefits seem to be pretty decent for the industry.

Cons

- I reviewed BlackRock a year after they acquired BGI, optimistically observing that I hoped they'd reverse some of their troubling trends in talent mis-management. They haven't. - People who have been laid off are leaving with huge smiles. The rest of us are actively looking for other jobs, and fortunately, we are starting to find them. - A handful of people find their work at BlackRock challenging, interesting, and appropriate to their level of experience and seniority. But the majority of us are being paid to do essentially nothing. - Senior management is still running an 8,000-person firm as if it's a small company. If C-level executives feel compelled to attend every project meeting, something is wrong.

Pros

1. If you're not the only person left in your team supporting umpteen applications then you can generally get time off whenever you need it.

Cons

1. you will acquire a boring non transferable skill set 2. you will not be given any transferable technical training unless you are willing to do it in your own time and pay for it yourself 3. If you're not a legacy Blackrock employee you have little chance of career development 4. not enough legacy BGI employees left to support the BGI applications 5. management ignore staff who have resigned and are working their notice - in some cases they won't even look at them - bizarre! 6. low morale and a general feeling of hopelessness in the London office
