Pros

Everyone is very engaged and motivated Good career opportunities- the prefer to promote their own rather than go external

Cons

If you are not on a graduate programme there is little in the way of training/development programmes An elitist culture with no diversity- the majority of employees are grads Oxford/Cambridge/St Andrews/LSE. If you are not from a red brick university or very upper class background you will stand out Not very competitive salary

Pros

BlackRock hires at the best schools, exposes its employees to real issues for solution and will pay well for performance. The national and global footprint provides the potential for some interesting transfer locations.

Cons

Much too much time in meetings/video-conferences! Then manager personality and non-business issues intrude into these meetings, leading to a reluctance to speak up and contribute to the "crowd-sourcing" that is supposed to be the point to the number of meeting participants to begin with.

Pros

- enormous prestige / CV - name on the street, sell-side coverage - work life balance - less pressure at the beginning of your career - no sell side manners, people very nice / open / helpful - also a lot depends on in which PMG team you end up and how they treat / train junior PMs, and whether they let you do only some middle office work or actually take risk (in my case was few months of grunt work, then risk taking with small limits and mentoring by senior PMs)

Cons

- real money attitude mostly, sometimes with longer investment horizon (depending on the asset class), but basically if you want to do intraday trading BlackRock is not a place to go - pay is smaller compared to sell side, at least at the beginning, later on it is highly skewed to seniors / team CIOs who are performing the best
