Too much politics, less good, more bad experiences

Pros

You have to leave your comfort zone and it helps to develop fast. The environment is ideal for extrovert people, not the best for introverts. No micromanagement. Employees can work independently. Friendly environment. Culture is generally open and colleagues are supportive.

Cons

Good performance is not/rarely rewarded. If you perform well you will get more work or more responsibility, recognition is a very long term thing at BlackRock. Bonus system and promotion process' criteria are not clear (too flexible to give the opportunity to make subjective decisions). Too much politics. Career progression mainly depends on how good you are at politics, doesnt really depends on your performance. Creating even short term plans is undervalued. Management provides not clear plans, there are a lot of open questions or essential guidance is missing when a new project/initiative starts.

Bad place to start career

Pros

-Exposure to different investment teams and products -Training program provides a good high-level introduction to the industry -Some new opportunities through internal mobility, though limited to your internal network

Cons

-Large amount of repetitive grunt work -Low compensation -Don’t learn useful skills relevant to investment management -Firm is very cost-conscious, enforced strictly by senior management, which I believe drives the culture, making it very difficult to hire/retain talented employees -Technology is outdated, and rate of innovation is far surpassed by the growing needs of the firm -Middle management is uncommunicative on important decisions, and avoids discussing the many problems that exist

We strive to foster an environment where employees are rewarded for their contributions and feel empowered to share new ideas and be recognized for them. We also invest broadly in developing our employees and providing opportunities for them to grow. We will take your feedback into consideration.
