Pros

Blackrock is a name company, there is a lot to learn, the pay is good. You can have a long career with Blackrock or leave after a few years with some solid experience and a big name on your resume. Either way you are in good shape.

Cons

Blackrock is not a meritocracy. The corporate culture, the promotion structure, the opportunities that come your way - it is all a matter of who you know, who is advocating for you and who knows you exist. If someone higher up gains an unfavorable opinion of you, your opportunities for advancement are cut off. As with most large companies, rather that learn the whole business, you act as a cog in the machine.

Pros

If you're looking for a place to start in the financial industry, this is a good place as you can start at the bottom and work really hard to find your way up. Their analyst program seems to be pretty good.

Cons

Their analyst program works well because they're hiring newly graduated college students. This way they can train their employees to learn the way it should be from the beginning. They'll have no other experience to compare so they won't know how bad the work environment can be. They prefer to produce with lean resources to make sure that Larry Fink will get his several million dollary salary and bonuses. Senior management only talks amongst themselves and then perhaps they'll take some feedback from the "subordinates" they favor most. Even if you do get promoted, there is no guarantee there is a raise because that will take away from the senior managements pay raise and bonuses.

Pros

can be interesting work but too manic and not planned

Cons

Tech group is run by the abrasive BlackRock 'New York clique' - if youre not in that group then forget it. Good BGI people leaving frequently since the integration. BlackRock (as usual) focused too much on the technology and not the people, its a bit late now to make token gestures. The performance management process this year is a shambles (again not focusing on the people) - very little guidance and no cascading objectives. All in all a complete disaster for the San Francisco BGI people. Trading teams need a PMO to organize the many development teams
