Pros

Blackrock puts great emphasis on building company culture and training its employees. The athmosphere is built on inclusion and diversity and it is not just some meaningless headline, the company is really strong in these fields. People are welcoming and helpful, which makes its much easier to get past the first few months and become a dedicated member of the team. There is quite a long period of training for new joiners, tech conferences and a wide variety of trainings are available later as well for employees. Blackrock is a very good place for starting a carrier in software.

Cons

Blackrock on the other hand is very much what people usually expect from a big multinational corporation, processes can be sluggish and inflexible. Lots of things are governed from above and company standards and decisions made many levels above often do not make sense on the level they have their effect. Manager decisions often override the technical decisions which lead to developer frustration and technical debt accumulation. Blackrock has also a very hierarchical structure, people need to become people managers at some point if they want to progress with their carrier. (If that is a carrier goal, Blackrock is a good palce to be.) There is very little room for a carrier on a technical path only. Also I believe Blackrock salaries are below industry average, at least in more junior roles. Their compesation policy is not transparent at all, just like most similar companies.

Pros

Managers have all the powers, even more than a HR. Different programmes are run to keep the employees engaged with learning new technologies. Drives are conducted to gather innovative ideas, which are also implemented in due course. Depending on which team one is working, the work life balance fluctuations from good to poor. It's a high performing company and anyone below average are forced to leave.

Cons

Manager has all the power. Managers' relations with HR partner make it difficult to raise voice against biases. When HR is not neutral, you don't have many options left to continue your fight for right. HR personnels are useless and are good only to perform admin works like shortlisting candidates for interview, processing payroll, formulating strategies, etc. A lot of politics goes in the team, and the manager's favourite always wins, whatsoever his/her performance is. Internal Job transfers are the worst thing to opt for as your career graph starts from zero every time you join a new time. Hence the overall growth slows down. Though HR conducts drives encouraging employees to apply for IJPs who have served more than 3 years in a team. Your payroll and bonus is not co-related to your performance appraisal. So even if the onshore function has given a good pool of bonus allocation, the local manager blocks most of it and releases very little to the team. I have heard telephonic conversations as a concrete proof.
