Pros

Moderate technical freedom and choice per team. More modern tech stack than most traditional banking competitors.

Cons

Stack ranking makes it virtually impossible to advance without a nepotism inroad. Also forces lower managers to cull decent engineers without reason. Gaslighting and insistence by leadership on obviously non-employee-friendly matters. No one is saying that forcing increased in-office participation is a good idea unless they're trying to get in with a c-suite.

Backstabbing culture

Pros

Pay is decent, food is good

Cons

They fire so many people every year they constantly have to run ads and fill job boards with a 100 postings in every city just so they can hire more people to them fire. If you get put on PIP it means you will get fired. Everyone steals credit and backstabs their coworkers because of this. Every single YouTube video I watch runs an ad to apply there for the role the just PIP me from. I met all my objectives and was just hired so the manager didn't have to fire the people he already had. Honestly the fact companies treat people like this is so disturbing.

Pros

Great benefits, flexible work environment.

Cons

Over the past several years, Capital One has been on a (successful) mission to hire senior leaders from big tech companies like Amazon, Meta, X, etc. While they have brought a lot of innovation in the tech space, they have also brought over the toxic culture from those orgs. For the first 8 years I worked there, Capital One was truly a company that put their employees & customers first. Today, it is unrecognizable to the organization Rich Fairbanks founded. They are doing forced PIPs on so many long time employees with absolutely no warning of any previous performance issues. This is all to avoid the optics of layoffs. The leadership seems to have no idea what they are doing anymore & employees have become just a body in a seat. I am so glad I left before it happened to me.
