Pros

Better WLB than Amazon. Fancy HQ.

Cons

I learned nothing since I came here because most engineers are clueless on what they do (including staff engineers). Hiring bar for engineers is very low compared to actual tech companies. The average code quality across all tech departments is worse than CS undergrads. Culture is rapidly closing to amazon, and this is clearly intentional from the c-suite. C1 is hiring a lot of Amazonians from executive VP down to associate level. Meanwhile the pay is less than half of amazon. Almost everything, from platforms to frameworks, are built in house at Capital One. Debugging and using these platforms and frameworks are absolutely pain in the a**. CEO clearly wants to mimic Google and Amazon yet he didn't realize the talent pool aren't on the same level.

Pros

Decent pay, nice office, good coworkers depending on your team.

Cons

There are plenty of other reviews that go into detail about why you shouldn’t work at Capital One, so I would recommend reading those. In short, performance management is a joke and ~15% of the company is laid off every 6 months. Management makes decisions that consistently go against what the employees want. In general just a very toxic environment with too much politics for the compensation. It’s like they want to be Amazon, while paying employees half of what Amazon does.

Pros

Good for ambitious young men. Plenty of challenges.

Cons

This was easily one of my worst employment experiences in a long career history. There's a culture of promoting young men fast who exhibit certain technical traits and results. Past experience, emotional intelligence and doing a good job don't seem valued here. The twice annual heavy weight performance review process favour individual results, over team collaboration or long term project success. Micro aggressions and poor behavior amongst the successful aren't openly challenged, instead being the norm amongst some. There's a culture of silence from leadership on anything that isn't working or hasn't worked well, instead opting for toxic positivity and constant unexplained change. If this doesn't work for you, expect it will be made your defect, not a structural or cultural issue.
