Pros

Capital One has great Work Life Balance. You work long hours only if you wish to, or don't know how to manage work, or have a really bad manager, or a stupid single person who just graduated and does not have a sense of work-life balance. One gets to learn new things at Capital One. Capital One really focuses on associates learning new skills (both hard and soft). Some of the projects are really cool to work on. Capital One also has good 401(k) package. Additionally, Richmond is a small city, cheap, affordable and trafiic is not bad. If you have kids, Henrico county schools are one of the best in the nation.

Cons

Lately, promotions have disappeared - its become more cut-throat and ploitical. if you can't please your manager, simply move on to a new team or be prepared to suffer all along. When I started, salaries were competitive, but in last few years raises don't even match inflation. To get a better raise and bonus, one needs better rating and due to forced curve, it has becoem difficult to get them. Bonus for mid-level jobs have shrunk as they canceled Long Term Incentives. Except for 401(k), other benefits are really bad, especially the health plans (person with a family pays close to $300/month with $3,000 deductible.)

Pros

Capital One does have one of the better overall compensation packages in the industry, tho' some aspects are being scaled back or eliminated (e.g., long term incentives below exec level). Also, benefits are top notch. There are often opportunities to work on visible and complex projects. Casual work environment. Working with many smart and productive colleagues.

Cons

Mandatory performance management distributions make year end reviews a zero sum game, i.e., only one or two people on a team can receive the highest marks (and corresponding bonuses) even if the whole team had an outstanding year. Downturns hit hourly and mid-level employees harder than execs. The company still has a bit of a consultant mentality, which means people who are really good at executing projects and working hard will generally succeed. The company is still trying to figure out how to reward people with ongoing run-the-engine jobs in a comparable manner.
