Pros

If you like working countless hours on things that often are more political vs. meaningful, then this is the place for you. If your career is your life, then this is the place to dive in and see where it takes you.

Cons

Too much CYA required. Management sees what it wants to see and often recognizes ones who are better political contributors rather than true work contributors. Work-life balance doesn't exist if you want to survive. The political side of Cisco came to the surface during/after the 2001 layoff. It has thrived since. Finally training of new managers has only just begun. Promoting someone from within to management (who has never been a manager before) is a gamble. Training is not adequate. Thus many employees suffer.

Pros

Salary and benefits. In the past they empowered the employee to do great things, now not at all. The technology and availability of "state of the art" equipment is awesome. The labs and expertise of co-workers is also great.

Cons

It WAS the best employer to work for in the 90's but now is far too focused on profit and micro-management. Too many layers of managers managing time and metrics. Everything is far too focused on managing peoples efficiencies so most people are stifled and the atmosphere isn't like it was in the 90's. I'm not saying that they can go back, I'm just saying that the focus WAS on technology, coolness and $$. Now is is squarly just focused on maximizing profit. I left after 9 years of employment to another smaller "start up" type company.

Pros

Good Job Security - Good place to build experience. Great first job, with lots of benefits. I work in support, and Cisco has a good system to ensure that I do not bring my work home. Also, for the support field, I am surprised how well Cisco Support Engineers are paid. Salary is definite plus. Additionally, pursing a Cisco Certification within Cisco is easy and inexpensive. There are many experts on hand to help the learning process.

Cons

Bureaucracy. Stifling young talent. Too narrow a scope of expertise, not enough interdisciplinary education or work. I wish sometimes Cisco Management will quick recognize who is a top performer and the motivated and talented folks are. Then promote them or encourage them to keep their development. Currently we only do performance reviews once every year and it seems the distribution of incentives is poor.
