Pros

Cisco has great compensation. I second what others say about how in Cisco, there are always opportunities for you to prove yourself. There is always enough work for you if you want to try new projects and and work harder, in order to get your name out and move move upwards. Another major plus is the lower management. They tend to hire people from within the current ranks, and therefore they hire people who have gone through the motions and know what its like to be a lower level employee. Compensation is also good, including bonuses and monetary rewards. yeah.

Cons

One thing that always makes me annoyed by cisco is the cubicles that are pale-puke green and sick-of-my-life grey. This seems to also be the theme with the exterior of the buildings. Also lining the walls of the interior of the buildings are really old pictures to -i guess- spice things up visually, but they are faded out now so are kind of depressing to look at. sometimes I find myself just not wanting to be inside those buildings, so work from home. Honestly, all they have to do is every once in a blue moon add a new picture to the wall, and it would make a world of difference. I saw the other day they were painting one of the walls orange. That made a HUGE difference in that area.

Pros

The best thing about working for Cisco might just be that you if you are a competent and productive engineer, you have quite a bit of flexibility in defining your role and your contribution level. If you are really gunning for promotions, look for a good group, find a niche, take on roles that are difficult or un-wanted, and work your rear end off. If you want to coast and balance your time between work and other interests, then find a steady group, manage your time well, and you can stay safe in your job with just about 40 hours of work a week... and you might have the flexibility to telecommute or work from home.

Cons

There is one other danger I must mention. This applies even in 'good' groups. There is a tendency at Cisco to just keep loading you with more and more responsibilities until you actually stand up and say enough. If this is an interesting job, you might find that you are spending more time on work than you had originally planned, at the expense of family, friends, etc. So decide for yourself how much you want to work and what your goals are. And then be prepared to work with your management to define the appropriate role. No one will come and ask you what you want at Cisco. You have to decide that for yourself, and then communicate it to your management. Also, if you do end up in a bad situation, be prepared to make an honest assessment of the situation and leave. No one likes to quit, but if you end up staying 5 or 6 years without fair rewards, you will find yourself falling well behind people who were your peers when you started... and this is really not a good experience.”

Pros

Executives do a good job of fiscally managing company Nice Campus with on-site gym, cafeterias, and coffee shop Free drinks for employees Relaxed dress code Flexible work schedule If you look hard enough you can find some interesting projects to work on.

Cons

No salary increases in the last several years. Entire sites were skipped over even as other sites did get raises. Overuse of the words "collaboration" and "innovation" by management. Just because the words are spoken, that alone doesn't make it happen. Large corporate environment, lots of politics, process, and lack of communication. Lots of jobs heading to India and China.
