A global opportunity with some insular ideas

Pros

DRC represents one of the best humanitarian INGOs, along with NRC, but lacks the staff care and development of a US INGO like IRC or MercyCorps. They can frequently attract more experienced staff because of a relatively higher pay scale and substantial growth.

Cons

Many of the systems are still immature or overly influenced by a small group of conservative Danes who treat the international section of DRC as a novelty or expendable. Experienced staff attracted by high salaries often become disillusioned when they realise that there is little to no support in terms of career continuity, retirement or work/life balance, the assumption that all international staff are supported by a Socially Democratic style state. There is also a disturbing vein of social conservatism wherein executive level staff judge international staff on their sexual preference, social or political alignment. This extends downwards in some countries where the DRC code of conduct is prejudicial against national Buddhist or Christian staff.

Underwhelming and shortsighted

Pros

Strong reputation in emergencies, clearly dedicated staff, less bureaucratic than many other NGOs making it more agile to pursue different opportunities in programmes.

Cons

Mandate and program direction is poorly communicated and understood. Operational systems needs significant improvement. Technically strong in protection related work, however other program areas are underdeveloped and uncoordinated. Regional and HQ have on again off again relationships with COs making support highly unpredictable. Lastly, salaries are really no longer competitive with the drop in the Euro and the imposition of a 10% "solidarity pool" deduction meant to offset taxation losses in other countries. This in particular is high untransparent.

Dear colleague, Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear you had a negative experience of DRC. We take your comments on board for further discussion. During 2017-19 we have the largest investment ever in DRC's history, launching new IT systems which should ideally address some of your concerns. /Marcos - Talent Management
