Pros

There are some really great people at Dell and having a career at Dell can be really rewarding, you get to learn a hell of a lot and it can be a good place to work because you are trusted to manage yourself and your time, it really helps to grow you as a person. You have to work really hard but then the benefits are well worth it.

Cons

There are some excellent managers at Dell however unfortunately they always seem to be the ones who are not favoured because they dare to stand up and say what they really think, personally I admire that way or working because at least you know where you stand and can count on them for the truth of a situation when you really need it. Its shame that those attributes are not valued more within Dell. On the flip side there are some really bad managers who dont listen and are weak / spineless because they dont stand up for the good of their staff when it really counts, "managing upwards" I think is the expression where they are only looking out for themselves.

Pros

Entrepreneurial sprit still exists within Dell - employees who are ambitious and able to seize opportunities can quickly ascend into key decision-maker roles. Relatively few political issues versus other large IT companies I've worked for. Generally a more family friendly, work/life balance friendly environment than I found in my Silicon Valley days. Also, the prevalance of using "meritocracy" as the primary means for salary/reposibility growth seems greater here than at similar orgs.

Cons

Dell is for self-starters - there is no published "playbook" or "owners manual" manual for managing your career. people who are adept at managing their own path and executing without hand-holding tend to do well here. People who want a more formulaic approach to a career path will be frustrated.

Pros

Dell pays very well, no question about it. The people you work with tend to be very fun and dynamic and the company goes out of its way to throw money around for its employees. Their promotion system is exclusively merit-based.

Cons

Dell makes it almost impossible to balance work and the rest of your life. Mandatory 50 to 70-hour work weeks are common there. This does not make for happy employees.
