Pros

Until a few years ago, you did get a decent amount of cash when you rolled up salary, bonus, and stock grants/options. You do get to work with technology, and the rate of technology adoption is not too slow in certain areas of the firm, so in terms of software engineering roles, you can work with fairly relevant technology and keep abreast of tool/technique developments.

Cons

Disfunctional work environment. They have a set of proposed conduct standards which are flagrantly dismissed and unobserved. The capability of lower and middle management is not as strong as it needs to be. A lack of developed management skills, plus an environment of advancement/recognition facilitated by the failures of others, results in a work environment for individual contributors that is uncertain, chaotic, and unpredictable. For managers, the environment makes success difficult in that managers below the Director level do not have much ownership of responsibility. Even when managers want to do something to make things better, they are not equipped or empowered to make it happen. In addition, management grooming and development activities at Dell are insufficient - you may find in your area that managers often come from 2 backgrounds: personal friends/associates of the area Director, or top performing individual contributors promoted into management as a "career advancement" (even thought they have no desire to manage people).

Pros

Mostly smart people, but it's been deteriorated in recent years. In general, most groups are supportive of family time. Only area to avoid is Consumer unless you are ok leaving your personal life at the door. Might be an interesting place to work in the future but pretty rough place now. Commercial side is significantly better. Senior execs very smart, senior marketing leadership is now first rate.

Cons

Chaotic. Tough, very opaque process for exec promotion. Unclear when/if layoffs are over. Unclear if the company is definitely positioned to win in the future. Sounds really good internally, one or two good quarters of results. Will be interesting to see if a turnaround can be sustained. Dell has a very guardrail to guardrail culture.

Pros

1. You are entitled to leaves within first week of joining the company. 2. You'll have numerous people to share you plight with! ;-D 3. They are sure trying to promote meritocracy, but looking at people sitting at the top you wonder if it really does exist.

Cons

1. Your just a badge ID no. 2. Management is always right. 3. Opinions don't matter, policies are made to be followed, not questioned. 4. You are expendable. 5. No 2 days are the same at Dell - well thats how we rechristened lack of stability/goals. 6. Growth opportunities is practically non existent. 7. HR thinks BS is the way to go. You ask them a question, you'll never get an answer - but what you'll get is loads n loads of BS. 8. Transparency in decision making is NIL. 9. Ethics is a shady term, you are supposed to do whats right for the customer. But if its between numbers and customers, ask ethics to take a hike and go after the numbers. 10. Over promise and under deliver.
