Pros

I chose a career at Deloitte because of the recognition and reputation you get from working at a "Big 4" firm . After working there for a little more than a year I can honestly say that I am happy with my choice. If you get your work done, show quality of effort and perform well there is ample opportunity to grow within the firm. The main thing is meeting the expectations that are set for you and exceeding them if you are capable. The benefits packages and the health subsidy offered are also great.

Cons

The only down side is the busy season when the hours become insane. I work in tax so we have 2 busy seasons that each consist of about 6 to 8 weeks. For the October tax season, the worst ever week was 105 hours. There were 2 weeks like that and the rest of the October busy season, which lasts a total of 2 months, was an average of 75 -80 hours weekly. The April busy season was not as bad as October, my weekly average was about 70-75 hours, and I didn't have to endure any 100+ hour weeks.

Pros

Deloitte is a great place to jump-start your career. Very few places will give you the ability to just jump in to deal with senior management right away and work with clients. Compensation grows exponentially, and even if you were to leave at the mid levels - you could jump to industry with a hefty pay raise, in a decent position. Generally your peer level people are great and you will be able to learn a lot from each one of them.

Cons

That being said, there is also a lot that is expected of you - be willing to put up with a lot of bureaucracy at times and a lot of long hours. It also really depends on the luck of the draw (in a sense) - depends on who you get as your manager, and how competent they are.

Pros

The pay is good throughout big 4, but Deloitte is a little better than others. If you join then you will have good support for qualifications and study. Promotions, or at least those given at lower level, are fair and performance/competence based. There are some very intelligent people you will work with, and there are good managers. The work can be engaging, but see below for the other side of the coin. You will receive a generous 25 days holiday a year plus 5 optional days you can purchase. You will also get 1 extra day off as a partner day. There seems to be more flexible working hours being brought in, and you can take days off without too much administration and advance booking to deal with.

Cons

It can be a quite easy to slip into your comfort zone, and not develop significantly if you do not direct yourself the right way. Senior management are not good at encouraging or mentoring, since they are too busy sniping amongst each other, and actual responsibility is low when in junior positions. The work performed can get very mundane quickly, and there is a lot of administration taking time away from more interesting projects. The workload is high and there is a growing gap between management and lower levels and this makes the workload on junior staff very high, and long hours are needed if you want to stay on top of your work.
