Pros

Ernst et Young provides its people with an excellent insight into its clients' businesses. Each day is a new learning experience. It strives to work accross borders in more effective ways than its competitors. The partners recognise the need for work/life balance and empathise but they rely on getting the maximum hours out of their people to keep their incomes in the top echelons of society so they dont speak back.

Cons

The US firm now dominates the other practice areas and the American implants sent to run the overseas operations have very limited local knowledge and cultural awareness. This means that decisions are often made out of ignorance of how markets and legislation operate in local theaters. I hear frustration from EY people that the rules are: The American way is the right way The American way is the only way. It works in The States so it must work here. Guys - the prices in Europe are not in USDollars, we have our own laws and customs - and so do our clients! Local customs prevail and the loss of clients in the local marketplace is down to the cultural schism between the unelected US leadership and the local staff and partners. The US leaders are just visiting and have no real interest in the values and long term performance of the European firms.

Pros

The name of the company and what others think when you leave to go elsewhere is great. You get to sometimes (though that is now changing) work for big companies and that is great on your resume You get to know and network with some famous people The training thats available is great if you actually have the time to do it The knowledge centers and databases actually can enrich you if you download and store enough for future

Cons

Management in this particular sector , Advisory is a extremely poor (save 1 or 2 partners) Most of the partners dont know what advisory services means and when you speak to them you can see the lack of depth. Clients are noticing this day by day and they are losing clients Politics - Crazy housewife politics between the partner group. Business is run like a sole proprietorship - If they find they are not able to sell at global rates they make everyone work 45 to 55 hours weeks to compensate - 45 hours weeks has been constant now when the employment contact is actually for a 40 hour week.

Pros

It is one of the big Four accounting companies. Having any of the big Four on your resume is a positive.

Cons

Management is very disorganized and lack knowledge of how to complete simple engagement tasks. A superficial, shallow and cutthroat work environment exists wherein staff as low as the senior associate level keep engagement information to themselves and limit interaction with staff lower than seniors. Additionally, information sharing is a "fly by the seat of your pants" approach wherein expectations to complete assignments are extremely high and accountability by management is almost non-existent. The cultural environment is extremely stifling, condescending, stiff and unfriendly unless you are of the privileged and shallow group of "annointed ones."
