Pros
- Great colleagues. - Mission-driven. - Good reputation and chance to meet diverse groups. - Good entry point to dive deeply into the industry/research/policy. - Can spare some capacity on your interest if you know how to navigate.
Cons
- It's a lobbying group more than a research institute. - Sorry for my words, but I don't know where did they find so many managers without research experience and research background to manage researchers. - Terrible leadership, expecting staff to take ownership but not giving incentives (sometimes even negative incentives). - The only roles of HR are posting hiring information and paying salary. Everything else they are trying to do is unprofessional. Worse than management if they are comparable. - Several seniors are yelling at their team members but no one is stopping - Unclear expectations from my manager. Very unprofessional way to assign tasks. I got tasks like I have to prepare slides and/or talking points for this person by the end of day for topics not in my field. Makes me feel like I am working in an authoritative company. Got insulted by this person for a couple of times, but feel very hard to report. - There are some good managers in my office, but it's like (70-30, good-bad). and sorry, it might be subjective. If you are not lucky enough, your experience is like hell. There are very limited ways to protect junior staff. HR once told me their role is to protect the organization. - Amazing people are attracted by WRI's mission and joined. Most left after 6 months -18 months. More than half of my colleagues left since I joined my department (for one year). "Bad money drives out good". - Extra working time for half of the week. Half of those are useless tasks. - DEI training is a joke. Only people who care about DEI received the training. NOT those ones who lack awareness. - Okay payment package but not competitive.
