Pros

This office has great people working here who are talented and really nice. The office is kept very clean, there's lots of opportunity for growth. We work on a lot of diverse projects some of which I've thought were really impactful. There are lots of "Team Building" exercises and off-site Happy Hours as well. This group knows how to party.

Cons

Some people have brown-nosed their way up and they really are terrible people to work with. Some are egotistical, others are indecisive, some are just plain mean. Hopefully, you don't have to experience working with them. We've lost quite a few people due to them.

Hypocrisy at its Finest

Pros

Built in networking opportunities by virtue of sheer size.

Cons

There is an empty shell of a value system at Gensler, despite the incessant talk and emphasis on the importance of "people". Gensler enforces all-staff meetings once a month in order to blatantly trumpet and proclaim their profits and how steadfastly strong the company is. They are the kings and queens of patting themselves on their own backs without being grateful towards anyone who helped bring them there - the actual workforce who are ultimately young in their careers, underpaid and overworked. Gensler studios constantly demand their employees to commit to working overtime without pay, and they hang the carrot of their constructed value system of promotions to labels such as "Associate" to motivate. Unfortunately, many young architects stay with the belief (as they are so specifically told) year after year that they will be promoted, but each year they are met with disappointment and the exact same excuses. The leadership at Gensler recognize their own inabilities to design or manage, so when they do ever recognize talent, they do everything to diminish it, as it threatens their own positions. Those who are promoted are simply good at "the game," ie. you attend the office happy hours and parties with rambunctious positivity and a can-do attitude. You cheer and clap at every all-staff announcement. You rub shoulders with Rob Jernigan and happily spread their exaggerations of truth all around town. There are many who do this, and unsurprisingly, these are the ones who move up fast. If you are able to shelf your own values, or have none to begin with, then highly recommend working here. It's also a great place for failed academics who are looking to make a good consistent buck for zero work! Gensler is always looking to promote their image as being more closely tied to academia, so there are some fantastic opportunities there.

Pros

Amazingly creative design professionals who are skillled in a variety of areas.

Cons

Where do I start? I began at Gensler where i immediately sensed that the onboarding process was poor. Once immersed into the work culture, there was very little if no work guidance and trajectory on day-to-day activities. Seeking this advice and guidance, I was met with indifference due to a lack of organization with managment. In order to continue with albeit some direction, I had to use my own personal laptop to achieve these directives as the advice from co-workers and management was they "didn't have the time or budget to spend on the software" after explaining certain software and platforms were necessary to perform the design and render objectives. I did use my personal laptop from home but then several co workers were upset that the work wasn't going "fast enough." Really...after explained my laptop was a bit out of date due to personal finances and the salary I was being paid at Gensler to purchase another was not adequate to purchase (which wasn't my responsiblity obviously). I did seek constantly direction in meetings and assistance and guidance on achieving the goals of certain projects to no avail. I also went to several other employees to learn about circumferential and peripheral projects in hope I would learn about what I would be doing. As always, I was met with indifference and then anger when I would try to ask. Really....this is from a large, professional design firm in NYC where the managment was distant and had no interest in pursuing a trajectory toward success on my behalf. Yes, it was super strange this experience and there is no exaggeration on how poor the environment was at Gensler in Midtown NYC. I have worked in design firms for years and have never seen such arrogance and disorganization. Seriously unbelievable and seems almost hallucinatory. A sincerely bad experience that I last 4 months and I have tried to put behind me.
