Pros

Smart people, financially VERY secure as a company, and they do great work - often. Compensation is good for people who stay a long time - if you're moving around a lot look elsewhere.

Cons

Low base salaries and reliance on bonuses - the famous phrase they use when hiring is "Take a leap of faith"...the rules about promotions are not rules at all and the action of the company breed intense cynicism. Some offices are really, really unhappy - almost terminally so. No overtime in some offices and people work crazy hours. A completely political company - find someone to be your powerful pal. This does not make for an ideal place. Overall, it's actually badly managed in spite of massive profitability.

Pros

Plenty of resources and experience that cuts out the mundane parts of the job. The materials libraries, blocks, presentation templates, and client relations take out a lot of detailing and cold calling that take valuable time. The pay is good, the boomerang program ensures employment. They also pay overtime

Cons

Because they pay overtime, they treat you like you have no right to leave. Project managers NEVER tell the client no and that costs the younger designers almost all free time. There is a large descrepancy between the big dogs and the worker bees

Pros

Nice office at Rockefeller Center, exciting projects, variety of people to work with, IT and tech were top notch, training opportunities were plentiful. Systems and standards to work between offices are well developed and implemented.

Cons

It is unfortunate that there is little personal interest shown in staff advancement by upper management or in fostering a harmonious team in NY. Smaller Gensler offices do much better at this. The impersonal approach results in a roller coaster of layoffs and hiring where experienced folks with higher salaries are shown the door in favor of low salaried interns who can't yet function in the real world of architecture. For the new hires it is a baptism by fire and many mistakes are made due to lack of experience and mentor-ship. Bare minimum benefits, minimum pay, less than average vacation.
