Pros

The co-workers and my managers were genuinely good, kind people. I enjoyed working with them. Discounts on hotel rooms.

Cons

These items are not specific to this company, and these policies are somewhat common among corporate-franchise hotels: That being said - Employees are underpaid, overworked. Entry level employees can expect to make about as much as a fast-food employee.Front Desk Agents get to wear a suit while making as much as a fry cook. Scheduling occurs last minute and fluctuates greatly, making it very difficult to plan anything more than a few days in advance. Front desk agents should absolutely expect to be verbally abused by guests. Nearly every front desk agent I worked with had cried at work. Prepare to be screamed at about things that are completely out of your control. Front desk agents should also expect to be forced to do things they would never comfortable doing otherwise. If you would be comfortable telling an old lady that has a legitimate reservation from months ago that they no longer have a room and unfortunately there are no other hotels with availability in the area, Front Desk just might be the job for you! If you hold the same position and responsibilities, your annual raise will be barely above the inflation rate. Unless you are paid salary, your annual "raise" is an insult. Employees regularly scheduled to work shifts in which they have less than 8 hours to return home, sleep, and get back to work. 8 hours standing up with an arched neck for front desk staff. No chair or breaks to sit down/walk. This is a health issue. Treatment of Third Shift Staff (overnight) in medium-to-small towns is horrific. Often times it is a single person running the front desk, and they get no bathroom breaks and no lunch break. Ridiculous "mandatory" meetings that are far less effective at communicating than an email would be. Employees do not make enough money or have enough time to take advantage of discounted hotel rooms. These are specific to the hotel: Preferential treatment of staff. You will be treated only as well as you are paid. If you are in a position of power, you will become nearly invincible.

Pros

Hotel and event center are lovely. Some members of staff are very nice people and hard workers.

Cons

The Hilton Garden Inn- West Des Moines defines nepotism. The general manager has two of his daughters working there, and one in particular is an absolute nightmare to work with. Her laziness and terrible attitude work like a poison on the morale of the rest of the staff. She constantly screams at and demeans co-workers, whispers about people within earshot, gives the silent treatment, etc. She was removed from the front desk manager position to an undefined "assistant" position due to her absolute failure as a front desk manager and trainer. She was unprofessional, condescending, rude, lazy, and had such poor hygiene that she made the entire back office smell horrible nearly every day. The whole front desk staff despised her but was afraid to speak out against her due to retaliation by management. Her father (the general manager) turns a blind eye to her unprofessional antics. She was incredibly insecure, resulting in her turning against those she was threatened by- intelligent people who wouldn't allow her to talk down to them. Even though she was removed from the front desk manager position, and should not be involved in the front desk at all, she still has enormous say in front desk matters and retaliates by cutting the shifts of co-workers she doesn't like. She truly was the worst person that I have ever worked with, and I am confident she would have been fired ten times over if she worked anywhere else. Her sister, who works at the front desk, also receives special treatment by hand-picking her shifts and who she gets to work with while her co-workers have absolutely no say in the matter. Nepotism in every sense of the word. I also witnessed a co-worker being harassed and retaliated against for becoming pregnant. She was the butt of jokes and constant gossiping behind her back. When certain co-workers (like those mentioned above) turned against her, she had her shifts cut and was treated so poorly at work that I think she has grounds for a discrimination and/or harassment lawsuit. The current person running the front desk means well, but is also a terrible manager. She tries hard at her job but is not intelligent and doesn't know how to lead. To make matters worse, she's clearly terrified of the manager's daughter, who treats her like a puppet. If you are looking for a fair workplace, never work here, at the front desk in particular. Employees are harassed on a daily basis and the climate will not change until certain members of the staff leave. The problem is that those who are behind most (if not all) of the office drama will absolutely never be fired due to family ties. It is a horrific, demeaning, unprofessional place to work.
