Pros

+ great technology + some amazingly good technical and sales professionals + interesting challenges + worldwide accounts + huge industry range + global company

Cons

I cannot speak for all of IBM. This accounts for my personal experience at IBM Dublin (Ballycoolin): - too hierarchical, i.e. too many layers of management - too metrics driven - lack of incentives for people to want to perform - too reactive = lack of proactive employee- and business-centric management - people are assigned job roles that are not in line with their qualifications, skill and personal career targets leading to increased fluctuation

- Flexible work environment from home, various location, various times - Great technical resources - Looks good on a resume - Decent pay and compensation

Cons

- Work environments radically different from division to division SWG = good, ITS/IGS = bad, IBM.com = terrible - Availability of training dependent on where you are GTA = good; anywhere else in Canada = Bad - Hard to get training in non-IBM products - Advancement slow - Constant outsourcing - Short sighted ROI in service delivery - Sales driven low regard for technical people

Pros

It pays to work here for a period of time. It is a world unlike any other and requires time and effort from an individual to help align his/her goals to the company's goal and understand fully the freedom the company gives. The opportunities to grow are immense and are driven as much by the employee as by the management. One's career is truly in one's on hand. Patience is a virtue that one acquires with time in IBM, but its well worth the effort.

Cons

One of the problems of being a place where it takes time to pay back both tangibly and intangibly, is just that, it takes time. Someone in a hurry will not enjoy the place. Once you get in, your salary increments are sporadic and will never be in line with those hired after you join. Negotiate well when you join.
