Pros

A growing company and a leader in the Canadian P&C Insurance industry. Senior management are dedicated, experienced and appear to know what they're doing. Competitive salaries (allegedly) and very good benefits, including an employee share purchase plan, physical fitness subsidy and available funding for ongoing education (if job-related).

Cons

Annual increases in last 5 years have been quite "modest" for most employees, unless they were promoted. This compares poorly to raises seen in previous years. Opportunities for advancement really depend on your department (and have been extremely limited and selectively distributed in mine).

Toxic culture

Pros

I was a huge supporter of this company in the beginning. I do not see any pros now.

Cons

Culture of nepotism! What that means? Manager A’s wife is reporting to his good buddy Manager B. While Manager B’s sister for which a position was created specially (yes, the job was never posted as available, with no relevant studies or experience) is given a position under manager C. Every now and then they get shuffled. Move the wife of A with a better salary and title under C and we can move the sister under A, with a better tile and salary. High performers or employees that are honest working, going beyond and above, do NOT have space to grow. Why? Because of the nepotism they will choose the relatives not the ones that actually give 110%. In another department the same: Manager X is hiring all her kids under Manager Y, her good buddy. Promotions are coming. Guess who is getting them? You guessed right… the kids of Manager X. This is ACCEPTED and encouraged by the company. Because this is the culture. There is literally no rule that states that the same family meme era can not work under the same director at least. Growth exists only for those with “connections”. Diversity and Inclusion? You mean all the withe French speaking leaders? Climate change policies when people are forced back to the office losing hours in traffic? You care about employees but the salary is still under the industry’s standard and you do not listen to the fact that nobody wants to be forced in the office for the “culture”.

Pros

It was the flexible work arrangement

Cons

They are now forcing managers to work in the office 2 days a week and everyone above 4 days a week. There was little notice. They haven’t forced all employees back yet, but the writing is on the wall. They previously said that there was no minimum in person requirements and have now had an about face. Do not trust them to not change things further. There is a big push to be back in the office because Louis wants to see people’s faces, even when he is sick he likes to come into the office.
