Pros

A great place to intern at for anyone looking to gain a hands-on experience. Unlike other organizations where interns/volunteers are involved primarily in the administrative work, the IRC heavily relies on their volunteers in all aspects of their work. As an immigration intern, I was directly involved in service delivery, working with refugee-clients on a daily basis. As an intern/volunteer at the IRC, you are treated as a professional equal by staff members and are granted a great amount of responsibilities. While interns are supported by the staff, they are expected to manage their interaction with clients, client case loads, as well as their work approach independently. This is a great opportunity to learn how the organization works from the inside and a great way to get your foot in the door.

Cons

It is a very challenging, fast-paced working environment. Interns often have to adopt a "learn-as-you-go" approach in their work. This experience would be the most beneficial for a pro-active person with a can-do attitude who can make decisions quickly and feels comfortable in ambiguous situations.

Pros

It had some of the best coworkers I've ever had and the employees are smart and very dedicated to what they do. Since the IRC is well known and respected around the world, it looks good having it on your resume and can open doors to other places. Working directly with the clients has created some memories that I'll never forget.

Cons

There is no training. New hires are thrown in. Usually the office is already overworked and understaffed and therefore new hires don't have the opportunity to get good training. There's no life work balance and you will need to work odd hours but overtime is rarely approved. There's always a look out for more grants and services to gain money but it can cause mission drift and require more services without more staff. Management was also untrained or didn't know how to fix problems. This caused low morale and high turnover which created a bad since there was no new hire training.

Pros

Great organization that does very meaningful work. Lots of employee resources and opportunities to learn and grow. Work environment and coworkers are very friendly and perpetuate a family-like environment.

Cons

Large organization and can be difficult to navigate at time. The international and national (domestic) areas of the organization are very separate and relationship between the two can be tense. HQ seems a bit out-of-touch with offices on the ground.
