Pros

There's quite a lot of interesting stuff going on. As JLR have only in the last 5 years started to put more effort into developing software in-house there are quite a few opportunities to shape the future of the company. There's some tools (like docker) that have the company is only just waking up to the applications of. The company is on the up at the moment in terms of profitability and upper management have recently recognized this by giving everyone a free day of holiday.

Cons

My experience has been that JLR lacks an efficient way to promote or even give performance based pay rises to employees. If you want a promotion you are often better off looking for a more senior role in a neighboring team and applying for that internally rather than trying to get promoted in-place. The recent hiring freeze has also not helped matters. There are also issues with differing philosophies of how code should be written. Some prefer an object oriented style and others prefer a more C style approach. These on their own would not be an issue but the factions are often divided geographically and as teams can have members from multiple locations this often does not result in a teams that can always agree on things. JLR also uses a large number of TCS contractors. While there are some with excellent skills that are a pleasure to work with it is often the case that some of them do not have the correct skills for their role. Teams are not always give a choice to accept contractors and are expected to teach the contractor the skills that the contractor was hired to provide.
