Pros

Great training if you want to be an accountant or tax advisor. Potential for international assignments.

Cons

You have to fight for all the training you need if you are not a wannabe accountant or tax advisor. If you work in technology, forget asking for a BA course, PRINCE2 or further software engineering training, the partners have no clue what you are talking about. You work stupidly crazy long hours and do not get any overtime paid back to you in the UK even though your counterparts in other locations get TOIL or paid overtime. You have to fight for an international secondment or any secondment and one person's decision could ruin all your efforts.

Pros

Looks great on the CV and the experience you glean from one of the big 4 is just incomparable.

Cons

Long hours, no support, no training, hot desking. Too much focus on "utilisation rates" to even say hello first thing in the morning. Ridiculous bonus - record profits for 2014 but only 2k for D grades? Hmm.

Pros

- Interesting work, if you have access to it - work with many smart people

Cons

- performance review process is a joke; grading is done in secret before the employee even begins their self-evaluation process - shared services (core services) employees are looked at as bottom of the barrel by the partners and CAs - your voice is never heard - only lip-service but not actual efforts paid to work-life balance, physical and mental health - no opportunities to move around, even in your own team, unless you are personally favoured by senior managers - pay for non-CAs is sub-standard
