Pros

The pay at Kaiser is the highest in the medical field that I know of. You have access to see how much people get paid based their position, the union they're in, and how many years they have been at Kaiser. It is union, except for any management/supervisor positions, so after your 3 month probation period it's almost impossible to get fired. The benefits are great, they are taken out of your union dues each pay period.

Cons

It is union so everything is based on seniority , your hire date. Even if you work your butt off, you don't get higher pay or better shifts. It can take forever to get benefited. I am still on-call after 5 years! I can technically work 40 hours a week and still not have a benefited position. This is mainly due to the fact there was a lot of people hired in my department at the same time, therefore our hire date goes by the time we applied, since we all got hired on the same day. I am one of the last people not to have a position, but the pay is worth the wait. Again Kaiser is union, so coworkers can be lazy....I think they forgot just how easy they have it and how much they get paid. Management can't really do anything to discipline , or won't do anything since our union is so strong.

Pros

I worked for Kaiser for 15+ years. As a mid level provider, there is room to lateral transfer from one specialty to another. There is collegiality among peers and between facilities. Upper management recognizes PA’s as an integral and important piece of the care team puzzle. Kaiser is very interconnected between departments and facilities. It can make it easier to fully care for patients. Continuity of care really rests with the medical record. Because all notes are typed, it is usually easier to follow trains of thought of other providers. When employees use the medical record, they really can be familiar with patients and maintain continuity of care. Kaiser is excellent for taking care of routine issues. Retirement plan available when I was hired is excellent. Orders for studies and tests are entered into the system as soon as you enter them, meaning you can put in a lab order, and the patient doesn’t have to bring anything other than their Kaiser Card in order to get the test. Cross collaboration is very easy. There are multiple ways to ask colleagues or specialists for their opinions on a patient.

Cons

Not all providers are good with the electronic medical record. Some providers don’t take the time to “know” their patients before seeing them, meaning quality of care can suffer.

Don't speak up

Pros

Great pay and benefits. Paid for time off for jury duty. Off most major holidays. Best paying. Unionized.

Cons

Management can make your life a living hell if you speak up too much. It's all about the numbers. Doesn't matter that you're overloaded and have to constantly work overtime, money is the bottom line. They don't care about you. I prefer less pay for a better work-life balance. Bye!
