      Spectra-Physics division: A technology-driven company with sizable growth in the current semiconductor boom

      Pros

      Plentiful opportunities to learn and expand your skill sets. A great place if you want to take ownership of research/development projects as there is an endless list of technical work that needs self-direction to get done. The company seems to be moving in an exciting direction with new products.

      Cons

      Spectra-physics has grown rapidly in headcount while moving lab space to a new building during a global pandemic. This has caused chaos. I am confident that it will be resolved but this rapid change causes lulls in workload and sometimes an initial lack of direction for new hires as lab space often isn't ready for them.

      Good company overall.

      Pros

      Internal education and training are available. Strong financial performance overall. Technical environment. Good team of kind individuals.

      Cons

      - Lack of business process training and expectations & requirements to follow business processes causes a lot of wasted time and quality issues due to conflicting expectations. -Company suffers from lack of bench strength in most positions (labor cost cutting). This leads to bad decisions and bad management at local level until the higher level management takes notice and action. -The desire / requirement for high ROI at the plant level also has some negative effects on innovation.
