Managing company

Pros

On the product side, it's about climate and ESG. In the midst of it, it's data. But inside, where employees are, it's all about managing. Layers and layers of management, where responsibilities are blurred and all you know for sure is who you report to. Everything else is just grey area. Actual job? Mostly meetings after meetings. To handle work? No: to manage. Meetings to manage, meetings to manage meetings, meetings to manage how to report to managers, and so on. Most of the though data work is offset to second-tier locations and the 90% of higher management (VP and above) remains static. And I mean static in every possible way.

Cons

It's a lost opportunity and a load of resources wasted when a company like this, with 1/5 of its current management staff, could actually push the same outcome and be way more nimble. But somewhere along the line it's decided that it's fine to overcomplicate even the slightest available process. Ah, and there's reorganizations every 4-6 months, so it's like a non-written policy at this point.

Climate: company going down

Pros

Extremely smart, competent and willing people in climate research and technology.

Cons

Very sad that MSCI decided to remove roles, absurdly offshore to lower cost countries and change product team structure every year. Top management sees employees as individuals rather than teams, and thinks that individuals can endlessly be replaced by lower costs employees. Products and product development are sacrificed in order to drive short term sales. As product quality declines, higher need for even shorter term and lower quality products. Senior top management only cares about short term sales and is extremely political in prioritizing projects.

Pros

- WFH+flexible, no small p.nis "you must sit in the office because why not" bosses, 1-2 office days per month is enough - Lot of (up-to-date) technologies, interesting work - Lot of knowledge in the team also in other engineering teams - good work-life balance, 8 hours per day is fine - very good salary + benefits - nice and modern office (if it matters) - free and enough parking places in the office

Cons

- Many incompetent colleagues in operation teams, they are not willing to improve proactively and on their own, all things have to be put in their mouth, they sometimes act like "issue rerouting team" - Lot of technologies are sometimes pain in the .ss. Whenever somebody left the team I had to took over legacy, undocumented technologies - The company sometimes generates ad-hoc tasks/projects that needs a lot of time to spend on and sometimes in the end these tasks/projects are closed after 1-2 weeks so the spent time is wasted - No documentation and no responsibility for crucial technologies, sometimes has to ask 4-5 people until the owner has found
