Morgan Stanley is a strong and good company. Opportunities are there, but because it is so large it is difficult to be small starting out, and you are often lost in the mix. Be very concerned with your branch and its management, because it has a huge impact on whether you will get the resources you need to succeed or not.

Cons

You really need mentorship early on, and if you are not in a well organized branch, or if you are in a branch where the branch manager is also in production (i.e., worried about his/her own book of business) you will not get much coaching or supervision.

Pros

Great Company, High Prestige, Great Compensation if sucessful. Benefits are great, flexible schedule and high degree of freedom. Senior advisors are able to mentor junior advisors to help them be sucessful. Great technology platforms, and you can do your work in whatever way you see fit. Large amount of autonomy can lead to sucessful practices.

Cons

Long hours, highly competitive, sometimes everyone is too busy to seek help. Large degree of autonomy can also lead you to large degree of failure. Goals are hard to reach. Large amount of trainees fail to complete the training program for one reason or another. Second chances are given only in extreme circumstances.

Pros

I worked in IT for 10 years and got promoted twice during that time. Hard work and talent are definitely recognized. Morgan Stanley is fundamentally a meritocracy. The technology infrastructure is great, and the caliber of one's cohorts is generally very high.

Cons

Senior management tend to get mired with infighting and turf wars. One highly politicized group I was in had far too many meetings to try and get everyone on board, resulting in a syndrome of all talk and little action.
