Pros

John Mack is a straight shooter so you know where you stand as a corporation. He is tolerant of errors but expects people to own up to their misjudgements. Whining is not allowed. This attitude has been particularly important during the last year when our profession has been under fire. Our strategists and analysts have worked hard to help us to help our clients. We are frequently out of step with what the rest of Wall Street sees and this has worked to our advantage. The benefits package is generous and addresses the needs of my family. The employer match for the retirement plan is generous. We also have a defined benefit pension plan which is unusual in this day and age.

Cons

Senior management and branch management understand the business and the everyday pressures. Senior management has provided better tools and IT systems than we have ever had before. Local management does their best to protect us from the idiocies of regional and complex managers. Middle management seems to be clueless. They are too busy protecting their jobs so they do little to stand behind those of us who actually put dollars on the bottom line. It is difficult to find a line of communication to a higher level if you are having difficulty with middle management. Middle management is so far removed from the day to day pressures of working with clients that they do more to get in the way than they do to smooth the way in a very difficult global environment.

Pros

Morgan Stanley is the epitome of Darwinism. It is a place where the best will survive. You are rewarded for doing a good job and generally paid well when you do. When you are a standout, the rewards are that much better, whether it be responsibility, new project work, promotion or compensation. Sometimes it takes time for the weaker players to be weeded out. People like this are usually in positions that require diligence in getting the job done, but leadership skills are not the cornerstone of the role. It is for these reasons that I have enjoyed my time working for such a great company.

Cons

When people talk about work life balance, I think they are being a little harsh to say that Morgan Stanley does not provide it. It is true that when you do a good job, you are rewarded with more work, and then you have more to do. It is more a case of you being the victim of your own success. If you do need time off for a personal reason, I have never seen a case of it being rejected. Most people at Morgan Stanley are true to the culture that Sr. Management breeds.

Pros

Morgan Stanley is a reputable, world-renowned firm. When I first became aware of the job opportunity, it almost seemed too good to be true. Morgan Stanley offers very competitive salary and bonus packages, benefits, and truly stresses "work-life" balance. Many of the Morgan Stanley offices throughout the Metropolitan New York City area have gyms available on-site or have easy access to NYSC or Gold's Gym (which Morgan Stanley subsidizes). Working at Morgan Stanley is an incredible learning experience, and one is reminded everyday of the bright, critical-thinking, problem-solving colleagues that surround them. The opportunities for advancement and career development at Morgan Stanley are among the best in the industry. Many online development courses are offered, in addition to workshops and graduate studies tuition reimbursement.

Cons

In the industry of finance, there are obvious downsides regardless of the company. Many divisions at Morgan Stanley work long hours - easily 12-15 hour days. This is not exclusive to Morgan Stanley, however. The general nature of the finance industry is quite unstable these days, so if you're looking for definite job security over the long-run, a company such as Morgan Stanley may not be for you. The only true "downside" to working at Morgan Stanley would be if you are a slacker or too dependent on others. This behavior would not be tolerated for long at Morgan Stanley, so you would be bound to have a short career here.
