Pros

Paid vacation and a comprehensive flex benefits program. Being employee owned is a plus however this is not always a perk.

Cons

Employee owned is nice but having shares is not the answer to being encouraged by management to work long hours with unpaid overtime. Overtime is always expected and pay levels are below average. Again, shares are the answer to this pay level discrepancy. Training is not provided to new workers on company specific software. Company has a thrown to the wolves method of on-site learning in this case. Tendency for other departments, such as the materials group, to push their work onto others rather than support the overall team effort is typical of all projects I have been a part of.

Thank you for sharing your experience with PCL. From time-to-time, overtime is required, and it’s always a challenge to find the right balance when there are project deadlines at play. We'd really appreciate hearing more from you if you'd like to drop us a line at Glassdoor@pcl.com. Thank you for the advice about fostering a team environment. Teamwork is an exceptionally valuable resource.

Pros

General philosophy is good - mirrors the parent company entity in Canada. Some good employees who make it bareable.

Cons

Long hours. I have worked in Construction for a while and sure hours happen, but they usually happen at critical times in a project and people on the team usually help you out on slow days by letting you go early. Not here. They schedule projects with the assumption you will be working 14 hour days, 7 days a week, with absolutely no flexibility/compensation. They have weak staff that they retain. Slow to discipline the incompetent, and they do not reward the hardworking. It's a locals club. If you do not fit in, you are not going anywhere. Safety goes out the window big time when schedule requires it to.

Pros

NPCL has a huge data base of lessons learned from past projects. You can easily contact someone in the company that may have experience with a problem you may be experiencing on a project. Employee owned company. Health benefits are good. 401k is good.

Cons

NPCL preaches that they promote from within, but when you have worked for the company for 5 years and NPCL chooses to hire someone with 2 years industry experience, instead of promoting you. "Yea we promote from within." NPCL is not team oriented, and very cliquey. People at NPCL are quick to pass blame, no one owns up to their mistakes. Favoritism abounds at NPCL. Only the manager's pets, get promoted and recognized. They almost seem to gain immunity when problems arise, and the blame is quickly passed to another "teammate." Expect to have no life. If you are on a project, you are expected to work 10-11hrs minimum
