Pros

- Brand recognition - Good pay - Unlimited sick leaves and annual shutdown holidays - WFH

Cons

- Slow work culture and pace - Bureaucratic decision making - Poorly defined work responsibilities - more emphasis on efforts than results - Zero accountability - you can just get by without doing much year on year - Not much learning - technology is at least a decade old - Racist policies - Dutch have better promotional opportunities than Indian staff. India has intermediate grades while Dutch have none. Dutch look down upon Indian staff as merely low cost resource who are expendable and don't really respect you as a professional. Some display very condescending attitude and arrogance. - Dutch functional leadership seriously needs cross-cultural sensitivity training to avoid faux pas or offending Indian staff. - Old-timers who don't have a clue about latest technologies or industry trends are still around managing smart resources. What's worse is they are proud to wear their ignorance as badge of honor! - Anybody can become anybody in this company (when they leverage on the connects they have). There are many instances where non subject matter experts are heading roles which require technical subject matter expertise. Doesn't inspire confidence to work in such environment. There is no relevance to job-fit, knowledge or skills or experience for such selections and the only criteria is the skin color and tenure. - No skip level meetings or interventions by HR. Only quarterly Employee Engagement Surveys which are carefully curated and favorable results are presented and no serious action is taken to rectify the work culture. - Benefits are being removed one by one. No charm to work at Philips anymore. - No rewards and recognition for support teams. - No OBL/offsite trainings for support teams. - No visibility of career growth path for support teams. Company is not dynamic to address the aspirations of millennials. Very conventional approach to career growth opportunities due to which smart talent leaves quickly. - Performance appraisal is based on perception of your boss than objective assessment of work done. - Poor quality of functional leadership (not senior leadership), wonder how these guys got to such leadership positions who don't have clue about industry best practices but are thriving because of parking their base at Philips for ages - contacts, connects and context keeps them going. - Parking is very limited at PIC, it's a pain to drive everyday to office and to top it further pain to find parking slot for 4 wheeler if you come after 9.30 am - If you are lazy love slow pace of work, be a boot licker of your boss and keep him in good humor, non ambitious and willing to dance to their tunes, parking your ideas outside the office, you can jolly well plan your retirement at Philips.

Hi there, thanks for sharing your thoughts on Philips as your employer here. It's unfortunate to hear that, to you, it doesn't feel as a functional and stable place to work. Have you ever considered discussing this with your HR manager? If not, I'd definitely recommend you to do that. Once again, thanks for sharing, and take care!

Pros

Very laid back work atmosphere. 35-40 hour work weeks for most employees. Great People. Small enough that you aren't lost in the ocean but big enough that you can make a good group of friends. Relatively safe industry. Orders are pretty consistent Y-O-Y.

Cons

Salaries are ~$50K below high-tech sector and benefits are few and far between. A lot of technical debt and legacy code. You will spend A LOT of time looking at 20 year old code. Nothing particularly groundbreaking going on from a high-tech perspective. If you're motivated by new software technologies you will find few at Philips. Philips values their optimizers (people who work with Ultrasound as a science and they are usually PhDs). They are core to the company while others are not held in as high regard. Those outside the core group will likely feel very disconnected from customers as well as the ultrasound product. In 5 years, I saw maybe 3 live scanning sessions and never once visited a customer site/talked with a customer. Ultrasound is a class II regulated medical device. As a result there is a lot of paperwork and regulation to follow throughout development. This will feel like a snail's pace for anyone coming from high-tech. Not a great place to grow your career unless you want to work in health-tech.
