Getting cheap

Pros

Typical public accounting pros. Quality experience, travel (if you are into it). Busy season meals. Staff sabbatical option (more of a ploy to get people to take an unpaid vacation in the summer)

Cons

Typical public accounting experience, long days, demanding, etc. Also, in general the firm is getting cheaper, and moving away from having some work life balance. There was a big movement last year to go more lean, which is good if you are on top, bad if you aren't. There really is a nervous feeling growing even for quality performers.

Pros

Maybe some social events Close to pubs

Cons

This is an awful place to work. I worked in the London audit team for a couple of years. Unfortunately, the department's culture is toxic and depressing. Some managers are complete lunatics; others deserve a prize for micromanagement, only if such a nomination existed. There is an expectation to be at the office or on-site at least 4 days per week. There is also an expectation to arrive on every client's site no later than by 9 am regardless of how far away it is from your home. The firm is reluctant to pay for any traveling expenses and any additional costs incurred. You may end up spending £30 a day on travelling only to hear that the expenses policy does not cover it. The firm is obsessed with timesheets with partners not hesitating to chase the following morning even for half an hour of missing time. Other than that, the firm is "famous" for long hours, unjust and unreasonable expectations from senior managers, a highly competitive environment with constant pressure on staff members at all levels, lots of politics around budgets and a constant chase for a "better recovery rate". Would not recommend it to anyone who is looking for a nice, friendly environment or supportive colleagues. The senior personnel often has an awful attitude towards more junior personnel with explicit disrespect. They won't hide that you are no more than money generating unit to them, so expect to be treated as one. Overall, horrible place to work full of toxic people at all levels.

Pros

Job security. Its almost guaranteed you will have a job if you work 12 hours a week including weekends during January- April 30.

Cons

Most of the managers are toxic bunch. You work 12 hour weeks and do everything you can. When it comes to evaluation the mangers will always bash the seniors and staff to make an excuse why the audit was not completed on time when its the managers fault. The managers are over worked and they review a day or two before the deadline and leave 100 review notes to be cleared which leaves no time for the team to clear all those notes. Some of the comments are: "why is this work paper saying 2019 ? Are we auditing 2019 or 2020 ? You need to do better reviewing your own work" petty stuff like that. A lot of staff and seniors quit after getting 1 or 2 years experience. The firm claims there is a lot of opening due to the firm is growing. That is a lie. There is opening cuz ppl quit. Advise : join only if you are desperate and if you can't land any other job.
