Pros

Texas Instruments is a great place to work in two scenarios: (1) you are a career starter and need someplace to get your bearings with decent exposure to technology, or (2) you are looking at an impending retirement and for a chance to simply while away your time with benefits.

Cons

TI's first big downside is the retirement home mentality ingrained within the organization. This is quite frustrating. The atmosphere severely lacks motivation, enthusiasm and sense of ownership and pride. Second, the company overall seems to have entirely lost its sense of direction. It wastes enormous quantities of time and resources chasing around after incredibly stupid projects that never see the light of day.

Pros

Fairly relaxed environment except fabs. Flexible about work-life balance, which has become a buzzword at many companies (it wasn't always that way). Management overall tends to be fairly respectful and humane with employees, though there are exceptions. World-class scientists and engineers mean you can really learn a lot here. Nice 'college campus' facility; pleasant, wooded surroundings with relaxing, calming environment even including wildlife (foxes, even).

Cons

Very little room for advancement - many technicians and engineers stay at the same level for 20-40 years, with just minimal raises (often 1-2%; none this year due to economy). Favoritism can be a problem depending on the specifics of the people and management in a group. Layoffs are the norm here - don't expect to move here and be here for five or ten years - you will have no idea if you'll be here six months or you might end up being able to stay 40 years - but the people who outlasted many layoffs to stay that long are really the exception.

Pros

Despite recent market events, they have a great product strategy and breadth that few if any competitors can match. Managers of the key businesses are strong and are finally embracing mass market needs. Top management keeps the focus largely on the areas that will be successful in the long run.

Cons

Management, at times, seems to repeat pendulum swing reactions to competitive threats or changing market conditions regarding people and investments. At other times, the wait is too long to get out. Lastly, managers at all levels need encouragement and reassurance especially in tough economic times when resource levels are under scrutiny. It's even harder to make difficult decisions when you are worried about your own job security.
