Pros

--Given big responsibilities which enabled me to develop my skill set --Having creative license to present my ideas and have them accepted --Learning firsthand about the international and local coordination mechanisms in place to protect refugees --Meeting interesting people (government officials, journalists, development and humanitarian workers) --The challenging environment of field work tests your character (pro in this case) --Good pay and benefits

Cons

--Little to no work-life balance --Lots of days working 12+ hours --Lot of consecutive all-nighters --Stressful in the field, navigating the local context --Inefficient way of working (averse to technology and time-saving methods) --Better training and orientation needed once you enter into duty --Burn-out is common (seen it in many colleagues), but nothing seems to be done to make things better or ensure it doesn't happen again

Lot of internal politics, process and not result-oriented

Pros

You learn about international protection There are so many opportunities to do great things in partnership with local NGO and other actors

Cons

Poorly managed - there's a lot of very negative office politics - people with the right connexions get high-level jobs created for them, internal competition between sections working towards the same goal, interns are not paid and work weekends and late night. Absolutely no work-life balance. It's normal to call you at 11pm during the weekend for nothing urgent.

Pros

Systematic, organized, good compensation and benefits

Cons

Bureaucratic, very much political, not good if someone is more creative, job insecurity and contract expiry, difficult to maintain work and life balance if a person is based in non-family duty station
