Pros

It is a place where there is an opportunity to do real science in support of our troops and country. I found it easy to get funding for projects that I basically dreamed up. The scientific facilities at ARL are among the best in the world in terms of ballistic and military research.

Cons

The promotional process is very rigid and bureaucratic. This slows career advancement down to an unacceptable pace for many people. The starting salaries are generally well below private industry. Sure ARL and the Feds in general give nice benefits, but the salary is often so low for young employees that it is not competitive with private industry. Wait until you can come in as a high level engineer to work for ARL. Those salaries are more comparable to private industry.

Pros

pension plan for those that stick in for 20 years. many soldiers feel they are serving a greater good and are really a part of a team. the salary isn't great, but it isnt that bad. across the board the compensation is average...but most people serving arent complaining. one will quickly learn more about politics and world events and cultural and military history. traveling is also a big bonus, but that can depend on the destination.

Cons

as an officer, after the first few years, the work can become very very strenuous. there are many jobs in the army that are relaxed and the expectations are not high. however in the operational world, one a Soldier makes captain - the slave mentality can take over. everyone is supposed to sacrifice for the greater good of the unit and the nation. therefore, work 60 hours weeks...now 70...no you cant get days off etc. Remember, your salary and benefits are fixed regardless of your production. there are no bonuses. also, people think the military is a meritocracy and filled with selfless individuals. the oppposite is true. just like any other large organization - the military is driven by people and their personalities and self interests. it is a decent organization, but one must remember that just wearing a uniform does not change the people wearing it.

Pros

Medical and dental benefits for the family is by far the best thing about working for the Army. All dependents recieve free medical care, and reduced dental fees. Another good reason to work for the Army is that during your tenure in the service, you'll experience many lows, maybe even the bottom. Knowing what bottom looks like gives you a good idea where to go from there...

Cons

The immediate leadership is more concerned with taking care of themselves prior to ensuring subordinates have no issues, concerns or problems. That mentality goes hand in hand with the tendancy to give very vague guidance and instructions, send subordinates out to complete a task, and then berate and punish said subordinates when the task is not completed to standard. The Army is also notorious for having a "one indispensible person" that knows a critical job, and does not replace or train others in that job, resulting in said person being unable to take time off. There is also a tendancy to judge a book by it's cover in the Army as well, i.e. someone who is overweight is immediately labeled a dud or worse.
