Pros

Exciting technology and intersting applications. Airfone invented the air-to-ground personal communications systems and were the phones in the back of airline seats for many years. We worked with a number of commercial airlines as well as the general aviation industry.

Cons

Tied to the airline industry and subject to that industry's profitablity cycles. When the airlines were doing well, there were funds to invest in the technology and marketing programs. Unfortunately, when times were not so good (as they have been for a while), Airfone suffered as well with lack of use, and therefore falling revenues. It will be interesting to see the future of this industry as broadband systems are developed and implemented.

Pros

Compensation at Verizon, in non-union positions is fairly good vis-a-vis other telecommunication providers. Having worked at MCI who was bought out by WorldCom, who, as we all know, went the BK route then reverted back to the good old MCI name - then was bought out by Verizon, I can easily attest to the fair compensation. This, of course, after having been there for many many years. I believe with any large corporation that if you put in your years you will be well compensated.

Cons

Too little opportunity to adance within the company. Very political environment in order to advance. Unfortunately it is now how well you do your job, it is who you know.

Pros

I (with 23 years service) work on the outside plant (installing FiOS), and where we are at this point in time, overtime is very good. We still have very good (if not THE best) benefits package because of our union, NOT the company! Overall, my coworkers are still motivated to do a good job, despite the lack of competence exhibited by our immediate supervisors.

Cons

NEVER, EVER do we get positive feedback from Management. It's always MORE MORE MORE! They also have the most unobtainable goals for daily productivity. The goals mentioned are seriously jeopardizing quality on a day to day basis, by "suggesting" how long certain parts of an installation should take. If they only knew what is involved in an installation, they wouldn't mention the ridiculous numbers that "have to be met". By that I mean 1st level supervisors have little or NO job experience, yet somehow they know exactly how the job "should" be done AND how long it should take! So what is happening is that newer, less experienced Tech's are taking shortcuts to meet these ridiculous objectives and quality is falling by the wayside.
