Pros

Better paying than comparable journalism jobs. There's the potential for a large amount of traffic just based on the subscriber base.

Cons

Contractors are prevalent, yet treated as second-class citizens. Depending on the facility, contractors may be denied access to basic services that others can use, such as a mailbox, showers, etc. Jobwise, this is a phone company trying to be a media or entertainment company, and it is failing utterly. If you're coming here to work for Wireless you're in good shape. Otherwise, don't expect to get any funding or for your projects to be competently programmed. It's hard to be in this position for this company where they don't respect contractors, don't respect content, don't fund content and don't fix things that are broken.

Pros

Theres a lot of exposure to new technology, especially with FiOS. Its pretty cool to be part of an "old telephone company" and still be an innovater entering new markets. Everyone I work with is really hardworking, dedicated and driven. Theres no cut throat attitude.. Also being fairly new, theres a lot of support for development. I have several mentors and have already attended a fair share of conferences and meetings requiring travel. I am also proud of the fact that with all the competition going on for reaching new markets and selling products, we haven't stooped to mud slinging. It reinforces my faith in our product.

Cons

Verizon Telecom is a large corporation and as with any large companies, there are some pros and cons. I haven't experienced it much, but with all the mergers between the different telephone companies (GTE, fBA, etc), there are a lot of systems and processes in IT that aren't necessarily efficient. That is the only complaint I have heard of.

Pros

the employee calling plans are great, you get 50% off all of the plans and most data features. the majority of co-workers are great and well educated, you can always find someone who knows the answer to what you are looking for. you are pretty much empowered to make the best choice to create win-win situtaions. they will cover up to $8000 a year for college if you are going for anything having to do with some part of Verizon Wireless. medical benefits are pretty good too, you can have a baby for $15. they match your 401k up to 6%. oviertime is pretty good, 40-52 hours is time and a half, 53+ hours is double time. if you work on holidays, it's double time and a half.

Cons

In my department, you don't have a set schedule. Management tries to build out the schedule a month in advance but it still sometimes makes it difficult to plan events in the future. You can work a closing shift and the next day have to open, also, there are always friday morning meetings which currently are at 7:30 in the morning. prior to the schedule being changed, they were at 6:30 am. Once a quater there is a regional meeting usually held on sundays. if you are scheduled to work on those days, you work from 9 am to 10 pm. sometimes if you do really well at your current position and others don't, you may be held back because they know you will get things done.
